Scholarship Applications Deadline June 21, 2013

The Dennis W. Holder Scholarship Fund will begin accepting applications March 22, 2013 for the 2013 Fall Semester.  We will have early acceptance of "2013 HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES-NEW APPLICANTS" beginning February 1st, 2013

Please be advised that the Dennis W. Holder Scholarship Fund awards scholarships to eligible recipients, once per year, during the fall.

Scholarships are available to the biological and legally adopted children and grandchildren of full-time, active HFD firefighters and retired members currently receiving pension benefits from the Fund. Stepchildren are not eligible unless they have been legally adopted by the firefighter.  The scholarship will be awarded for a maximum of four years. However, please keep in mind that the scholarships are not granted automatically. The applicant is responsible to re-submit an application annually (during the stated application period), to include required documentation in order to receive the scholarship.

All applications, along with required documentation, must be submitted in person or via certified mail with return receipt requested to the Dennis W. Holder Scholarship Fund.

The online forms are in a fill able format, so it is recommended you fill out your forms online, print out and then sign all documents as needed. This will make the process go faster, as it is difficult to read someone's handwriting.(You may submit all required documents via fax or email, with two exceptions: (1) photo (must be 400 x 600 jpeg sent electronic which has to be emailed), and (2) sealed unopened college transcripts, which have to be either mailed or hand delivered.)

This application must be delivered to 4225 Interwood N. Parkway, Houston, Texas 77032-3866 and received by no later than 4:00 p.m. on Friday June 21st, 2013.  Incomplete and late forms will not be processed.

Eligible applicants will be notified in writing of their awards no later than Friday, August 23, 2013.  The amount of the distribution depends on the number of eligible recipients and will be divided equally among eligible recipients.

Please keep in mind that only sealed OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS are acceptable.

Once seal is broken, transcripts become unofficial and WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.  Also, no copies or computer generated transcripts will be accepted.

Please be aware that in the Fall of 2012 the Board of Directors added additional requirements. New and returning applicants should review the eligibility requirements carefully. DWHSF recommends you get your application and required documents sent in as early as possible. If you wait until the last minute, valuable time will be lost to supply any missing documents before the deadline. **Student pictures with firefighter sponsor ("if possible"): We realize due to distance, and timing that it may be hard or impossible for student to take picture with firefighter sponsor. Student can hold a picture of their firefighter sponsor and have someone take a picture, that way both student and firefighter sponsor are in the picture. Deceased sponsor-only student picture.

All applicants are individually responsible for contacting the DWHSF office to verify that all required documents have been received in the DWHSF office, and processing is complete. Incomplete or late applications will not be processed.
