Dennis W. Holder Scholarship Fund
Eligibility Requirements
2010 Fall Semester
Funded by Houston Firefighters and private contributions
Award: The Dennis W. Holder Scholarship will be awarded to children or grandchildren, either biological or adopted, of active City of Houston firefighters or members who received, or are currently receiving, pension benefits from the Houston Firefighters' Relief & Retirement Fund, to attend an accredited college, university or technical training school. The scholarship will be awarded for a maximum of four years.
Amount: Determined annually by the Board of Directors.
Applications and requirements must be received no later than 4:00 PM on Friday, July 9, 2010
Award Announcement: On or before Friday August 13, 2010.
Eligibility Requirements: (The requirements are subject to change due to availability of funds from year to year.)
- Applicant must be a child or grandchild, either biological or adopted, of active City of Houston firefighters, or members, who received, or are currently receiving pension benefits from the Houston Firefighters’ Relief and Retirement Fund.
- A widow or widower of a firefighter killed in the line of duty.
- Applicant must already be accepted into a fully accredited 2 or 4-year school.
- Applicant must maintain a grade point average of C or higher if already enrolled in college courses.
- Applicant must be in senior year of High School or has not been out of high school for two years, except if he or she is a widow or widower of a firefighter killed in the line of duty or if he or she entered the military after High School.
- Existing College and/or Masters/Doctorate program applicant must not interrupt or have a break in course study for more than two consecutive years and will only be allowed a one-time interruption of their education.
- Step-children or step grandchildren are not eligible unless they are legally adopted by the firefighter parent or grandparent.
- Any extenuating circumstances are to be reviewed and decided on by the Board of Directors.
First Time Applicant Requirements:
- A completed and signed application form.
- Copy of a certified birth certificate or proof of adoption (if applicable).
- For High School students: Letter of acceptance from the school that you wish to receive the funds. For College students: latest official transcript of records showing a grade point average of C or higher. This Official Transcript must include grades as of the last semester attended including Spring 2010, if applicable. (Computer/internet printouts of grade reports and copies of transcripts will not be accepted as Official Transcripts.) Only sealed (unopened) official transcripts are acceptable.
- A notarized “Grandparent Affidavit” for applicants sponsored by grandparents. If sponsoring grandparent is deceased, the spouse of the grandparent has to submit a notarized “Deceased Grandparent Affidavit”. If both grandparents are deceased, the applicant’s parent (son or daughter of the deceased firefighter-grandparent) must submit a notarized “Deceased Grandparent Affidavit” and must submit a birth certificate in order to confirm relationship.
Returning Applicant Requirements:
- A completed and signed application form.

Please note: All scholarship monies will be given directly to the applicant’s institution of choice to be used toward the payment of tuition and other expenses. ALL APPLICANTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR TURNING IN A COMPLETED APPLICATION FORM WITH ALL THE NEEDED REQUIREMENTS AND DELIVERING THEM EITHER IN PERSON OR VIA “CERTIFIED MAIL RETURN RECEIPT REQUESTED” TO ENSURE THAT THEY ARE RECEIVED BY THE DEADLINE DATE. INCOMPLETE FORMS WILL NOT BE PROCESSED.
All of the above items are to be submitted and received at the address below no later than 4:00 PM on Friday, July 9, 2010 Applications received after this date will not be processed for the Fall 2010 Semester.
